It is always best to talk if expectations aren't clear! However, we've always believed (and made it a practice) that the only true representation of a new team member's work...is their work. I am not sure if that is such a great idea. Why do you want to test your project manager? What is wrong? If there is something amiss, one should just go ahead and talk.
